AIV welcomes local artist GEORGE KOCAR
for the month of April - May 2008.

This exhibit will feature recent large scale
paintings by Kocar. Best known for his
humorous subject matter, colorful palette
and historical references layered within
his works, Kocar's body of work at AIV
is a strong political tone to the humor while still
captivating the viewer with his ability to paint.
Layers of characters and scenery dominate the
canvas and create a view into more than just
a cartoony painting. Rich with self imposed humor,
family members, political and art historical images
infiltrating the space along with the subject matter
provides the viewer with insight into a deeper
idea behind figurative works with a message.
The exhibit is up until May 31.

Kocar is an award winnng artist who has exhibited his paintings in over 300 shows across the United States.
He has won numerous awards including a Jurors award
at the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, Ohio in 1985 and 1998, Best of Show
at the Ohio Exposition Center in Columbus, Ohio in 1998,
a Jurors Award at the Western Colorado Watercolor Society in 2000,
an award for printmaking at The Society of American Graphic Artists
in New York in 2002, and The George Stocker Award for watercolors with
The Ohio Watercolor Society in 2003, First place for painting at the Zanesville Art Center
Annual Exhibition in Zanesville, Ohio in 2007. He is listed in Who's Who in American Art.
He has a B.A. from Cleveland State University (Class of 1977) Cleveland, Ohio,
and a M.F.A. from Syracuse University (Class of 1983) Syracuse, New York. George is a lifetime Cleveland
area native. He lives with his wife Kathleen. He has two daughters. Diana
is a recent Graduate of Ohio State University majoring in music and biology,and now studying
medicine at Wright State University, and Allison who is a graduate of the
School of Visual Arts in New York majoring in computer art.
She is a freelance video effects artist and an instructor at The School of Visual Arts.
She resides in the Williamsburg district of Brooklyn, New York.

Bio from Anna Arnold's website:

Anna Arnold is a native Clevelander. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1983 and has exhibited in nearly 200 solo and group art exhibits throughout the United States and has taught hundreds of school children as a visiting artist. Anna is widely known for her vividly colorful expressive portraits, ceramics, masks, beads and painted furniture.

Highlights of Anna’s exhibitions are the Cleveland Museum of Art, Akron Art Museum, South Bend Regional Art Museum, Indiana, Center for Art and Religion, Washington, DC., Progressive Corp., Cleveland, Promega Corp. Gallery, Madison, WI., Western Reserve Historical Society and Wasmer Gallery at Ursuline College, Pepper Pike, OH,.

Her works are in the permanent collections of Progressive Corp., Kaiser Permanente, Metro Health Hospital, Ursuline College, the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland and the Cleveland Public Library. Noted commissions are "Angel On My Shoulder" (see above) for the 2006 American Cancer Society's Cattle Barron's Ball Live Auction created with children from the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Service to the Field Award, 2006 portrait of Garth Fagan, choreographer of the "Lion King" presented by DanceCleveland and the stunning mixed media stained glass and mosaic tile Globe for the Historic Cleveland Public Library in downtown and GuitarMania.

Since 2004, Anna has been a full time art instructor with the City of Cleveland in the Division of Recreation. In 2006, she became involved with the Bureau of Cultural Arts Department's Mural My Neighborhood, an arts-based mural training program for teens fom the Cleveland Municipal School District. The team recently completed 4 dynamic murals that she helped to design and paint with Jerome White and Mural My Neighborhood students at locations in Cleveland's historic Glenville neighborhood. The second year of Mural My Neighborhood began in January 2007 and ended during the summer with the installation of "the Keys to the Future" and "The Tribute", in honor of Ted Ginn Sr., the influential Glenville High School football coach.

Arnold's vibrant, colorfully expressive
works speak to a more emotive, positive
style of painting. The body of work on display
at the gallery reflects her range in mediums
through different portraits of people and relationships
in watercolor, tightly controlled color applied to
well known faces on canvas and many personal
self portraits /personalities on paper. The portrait
Anna's style speaks to the personality of the
subject and their emotive state rather than how
perfect the anatomy of the figure is painted.
She is an expressive generation x artist who
was born and raised in Cleveland, attended CIA
and is currently trying to make a living as an
artist in Cleveland, Ohio. Anna is the first artist of 2008 !

AIV 5700 Gallery - October/November Art Exhibit =SELECTED WORKS from THE MIX

For the months of October - November, 5700 Gallery
will be exhibiting the works from two sessions of Patsy Kline's
THE MIX

This summer and fall, local curator Patsy Kline assembled
several artists to meet and make work while together at
the Tremont Art Walk or the Oberlin Art Museum for several
hours ( Tremont was a 48 hour event ) outside of her mobile
art gallery, Gallery U-HAUL. As a participant, I created works
along with Tim Russo, Chris Foldi and Matt Nisius.

Many of the works created at the event were performance,
installation or spoken word/ poetry. Very few items could
be hung on a gallery wall but with the help of some framing
and co-laboration, the exhibit up at 5700 demonstrates the
ability to create anyway, anywhere with anyone !

The show is on exhibit until November 30th, 2007

5700 Gallery is currently featuring the photography work of local Akron artist/poet Cheryl Townsend. Her subject matter often encompasses seductive nudes, stark landscapes and vivid colors in nature. Townsend is an avid gardener and preserves her labor in her artwork. All works featured in the exhibit at 5700 were locally grown, printed, matted and framed by the artist.

The exhibit is on view until September.

"I am a poet, avid photographer and the onetime publisher/editor of Impetus Magazine, which I published through Implosion Press. Implosion Press now proudly publishes epitome magazine, a regional magazine that celebrates the arts. minds and ambitions of women in NE Ohio. I am the cofounder of the Womens Art Recognition Movement (W.A.R.M.), based in the North Water Street Gallery in Kent, OH and used to be the owner of Cat's Impetuous Books, also in Kent, where I specialized in small press books and held regular poetry readings, art exhibits and live musical performances. I don't like living in the past, but.. Hell, that's where the fun was.
In 2004, I played Jesus in the indie film Jesus & Her Gospel of Yes, produced & directed with Alfred Eaker which should soon be available on DVD."

" In my photography, I seek overlooked angles and textured forms, vibrant displays of discarded beauty and grains. Looking for the tree in the forest, I focus further on the patterns in the bark. My vision is everyday objects abstracted via detailed selection. I seek blatant colors juxtaposed with decay to project the beauty in its passing. In the human form, I try to show the sensuality in non sexual captures, to play on shadows and the bends of flesh. I always shoot with a zoom lens, leaving the picture to find me, rather than I to find the picture. I hope to prove that art can be found anywhere if one would just take a moment to look."

MATT DIBBLE - " PLASTIQUE INFORMALE " ~ AIV5700 June/July Exhibition

Local Artist Matt Dibble ~ “Plastique Informale,”
a collection of abstracts and energetic mixed media works.

Cleveland native Matt Dibble is better known for his large, abstract expressionist canvases, but the intimate nature of the smaller creations draws viewers into a more personal realm. These seldom seen abstracts include richly detailed work, sensual shapes, and a keen use of color.

Dibble’s work will also be on view at the 50th Chautauqua National Exhibition of American Art through July 11th at the Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts. The show, curated by Barbara Luderowski and Michael Olijnyk of The Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, will open on June 24th with a gallery talk by the jurors and an opening reception.

Dibble has exhibited at venues such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, Spaces, and the Butler Institute of American Art. William Gould is nationally recognized professional in architecture, urban design and land use planning. Mr. Gould has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Michigan and Master degree in Urban Planning from Cranbrook Academy. He is currently principal-in-charge of Urban Renewal Planning; including Slum & Blight Evaluations for the city of Lorain, Ohio. He founded Artspace, an organization making downtown spaces affordable studios for artists to live/work. His studios are located within the 1400 Boxtop Building in Midtown where he lives with his wife Harriet Gould. This unique studio location is home to Tastebuds Restaurant, Terra Vista Ceramic Studios, Zygote Press and many other individual visual artists.
The series of works on display at AIV 5700 Gallery are reflections of the region's cityscapes. An artist working in the city, Gould captures familiar scenes and sites while injecting color and vibrancy into his pieces. Many of the works reflect neighborhoods, churches and unique viewpoints rich in community from within sections of Cleveland. He paints on canvas and watercolors of urban and natural places that depict beauty and balance. His goal is to observe these places and record them for further study and evaluation.

"For many years, I have used watercolors to record my impressions of places in Cleveland," explained Gould. "I believe each region has a unique character that needs to be depicted. What is unique to our region is my quest. I often wander throughout Cleveland, accompanied by paper, camera and watercolors, to paint important or exciting aesthetic experiences of visual beauty. My eyes, hands and mind convey that certain spirit of a place on each painting."

" SHOW : UNTITLED "

This new exhibit features seventeen new works on canvas. Each of the works are created by drawing gestural sketches into wet canvas gesso and rich oil color on the surface. Each piece is then sanded down, repainted with several layers to reveal each surviving "ghost" image left behind and repainted. The remaining image retains the original gesture while revealing the different forms, colors and spatial relationships the artwork morphs into within the process.

AIV will be featuring each artist for two month / eight week period to better ensure exposure during different times of the year. The 2007 calendar will feature many local artists such as Kate Ward Terry, Shari Jamison, Todd V and many more - stay tuned

Pavone currently works for the city of Cleveland as a photographer. She originally received her degree from Findley College but her photography degree is from Cuyahoga Community College. She is wrapping up a thrid degree in education from Cleveland State University. The works currently on display reflect her concentration on the unusual everyday visual landscape in Cuyahoga county. Pavone is also a glass artist and some of her works in the exhibit reflect some of studio work at the Glass Bubble Project in Ohio City.

The work will remain on display in the AIV gallery until the end of January and stay tuned for our 2007 Exhibition line up and an exhibit closing !

This month at Art In the Village, I have curated an excellent exhibit of local artists in a group exhibit chosen from my personal art collection. I find collecting local art a personally rewarding investment on the small scale and this is my example of how one not very wealthy volunteer coordinator can collect some great stuff by personal relationships with the artists, art auctions for charity or great bargins from studio visits or artwalks. On display at AIV would be several pieces I am very proud to have in my own home for personal enjoyment as well and it sure makes the house look swell too. The artists featured in the small group exhibit would be Craig Lucas, Scott Radke, Michael Loderstadt, Laila Voss, Bruce Edwards, Derek Hess, Dexter Davis, Greg Alberti, Maria Garcia Blume, Kyle Stone, Blythe Pavone and this gem above from Michael Wartgow. The exhibit is up thru the month of September.

Our featured artist for the month of July is Natalie Lanese. This local artist is currently working towards her Master of Fine Arts at Pratt in New York where she attends graduate school. Her current body of work features a focus on collaged images of interior patterns, advertising models and appealing items of consumerist culture. Last summer her works were featured at the NEWSENSE gallery and at BUZZ Gallery. Accepted to Pratt, this former CIA grad has brought back a few highlights from her studies at the institution and these works will be featured at our space for the month of JULY. PLEASE join us this THursday, July 6 from 5:30 - 8:30pm for an artist's reception for Natalie. Free Parking, snacks and wine - get cultured & support art !

This summer AIV will be featuring some of our recent graduates from our local art institutions and art colleges to further support emerging artists who are new to the area, not commerically acceptable. Art in the Village provides a much needed professional, non-profit, non-commerical space to visual artists in the northeast ohio region to showcase their work to the cultural community of greater Cleveland.

Artist Biography: Lifelong northeast Ohio native todd v is an energetic multi-tasker in life and in art. He�s a prolific painter who works on several canvases at once -- each in a different style. To market his work, Todd created iSmudge, an on-line art gallery that now features the work of more than 970 artists from around the world. He also works full-time as website developer and systems manager at a family-owned insurance company. His mother, also an artist, recognized Todd�s aptitude for the visual arts when he was young, and enrolled him at Chagrin Valley Art Center. At age 6, he won an award in the first contest he ever entered. At Hudson High School, Todd took every art class he could, from photography to graphic design, and as a senior won a Gold Key, the highest honor conferred by the Scholastic National Art Awards. During the next several years he developed computer and marketing expertise, which eventually landed him a position in charge of the company�s websites and on-line development. He would later apply these skills to create and maintain iSmudge. Today, he maintains the website of the Cleveland Artists Foundation, and he launched The Cleveland Canvas in March 2004. The Canvas is a monthly online arts and cultural newsletter that reaches well over 2,000 monthly subscribers. Recently todd began working with Hector Vega in his new gallery ARTEFINO, and uses his time to help other artists enjoy the same success he has. Her works are on display at Art in the Village 5700

Arabella is a Cleveland based painter and co-owner of Elephant Stone Records. Her loose narrative themes and interests revolve around a fascination with punk fashion; aristocrats; Elizabethan portraiture; Ian Schrager hotels; vapid socialites; eastern European cultures and rock n’ roll lifestyles.
A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, she attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA before receiving a BFA from California Institute of the Arts where she studied art, animation and film. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, Laguna Beach, Boston, Austin, San Diego, Cleveland, London, and Moscow.

APRIL AIV Featured Artist – Bridget McGinty

This month AIV@5700 features local artist and chef Bridget McGinty. Her paintings are usually seen adorning her trendy café TASTEBUDS, but this month they travel to the walls in Slavic Village for a solo exhibit of her recent works. McGinty’s paintings are comparable to the food she lavishly prepares, both flavorful and colorful in presentation and preparation. Her abstract works feature bright colors and forms energetically interwoven on canvas bursting with movement and expression. Many of McGinty's pieces include the landscape of Cleveland, figures, gestures and faces within abstracted shapes and colorful use of bright hues and thick strokes of acrylic paint.
McGinty was born and raised on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Erieview Catholic High School, moved to Tremont in 1989 and was greatly influenced by the culture and the creative class who resided in the neighborhood. She has worked in several fine dining establishments until 2001 when she opened TASTEBUDS, her own space in Chinatown. When asked about her work, the artist states; “ I have an insatiable love for flavor and color, I consider my paintings very personal expressions of my feelings I am unable to contain.”

"I paint in watercolors, pastels, oils and acrylics. I do paintings of people, landscapes, city scenes and wildlife. I also have an ongoing series of India ink portraits and landscapes. Most of my current work is urban landscapes and I'm now busy with Great Lakes themes.

Towner's recent series of urban Cleveland landscapes featured at 5700 are inspired by a recent late nite photo shoot in the industrial valley in the middle of winter in the dead of night. Her work has been featured in many galleries in the Cleveland area, most recently at the Paradise Gallery in Cleveland Heights. The artist currently works and lives out of the Tremont neighborhood. Barbara Breen is a Cleveland photographer whose work featuring local neighborhoods incorporates multiple layers of past and present. Her black and white images are presented in a familiar manner that allows the viewer their own measure of nostalgia. The current exhibition at AIV@5700 Gallery features Breen’s work of local storefronts, former factories, and nearby bridges from the Slavic Village area. Her signature process is working in large –format photography that enables the viewer to see character and texture of each subject. Breen is a graduate of the Ohio Institute of Photography and has worked in the Cleveland area for several years. Capturing old storefronts and neighborhoods in the Midwest has been a focus of her black and white portfolio. Her images from her Slavic Village project were published locally; nine of her images were featured in the bicentennial book “ Images From the Heart “ and Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Sunday Magazine (6/16/96). By day she works as a photographer for the Cleveland VA Medical Center, taking shots of surgeries and patients. Currently, she lives in Beachwood and works out of her studio in Cleveland Heights. She has exhibited her work at JCU, BW, Lightkeepers Gallery, the College of Wooster, Mansfield Art Center and she was featured in the May Show at CMA in 1990. NEW ART SPACE OPENS IN SLAVIC VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD

Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland
to Promote Local Artistic Talent in
Newly Renovated Space in Slavic Village Historic District

Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland (NHSGC)
announces the opening of
Art in the Village @ 5700
their new gallery space within their main offices.
Located at 5700 Broadway Avenue
in the Slavic Village Historic Business District,
the space offers a new, unique opportunity
to showcase local emerging artists.

Lou Tisler, Executive Director of NHSGC states,

“Opening our doors to the opportunity of the mixing of local artists with the art serious and art curious, creates a critical mass of community, culture and sense of place.”

Open for public viewing during regular business hours Monday thru Friday, 9am. – 5pm, the space will rotate local artists monthly on the walls and will be curated by local artist and former Buzz gallery owner, Bridget Ginley.

welcome to the Art in the Village @ 5700 Gallery blog ! The Neighborhood Housing Services of Great Cleveland is opening their wall space to local visual artists. Monthly solo exhibits will be featured starting in 2006. The non-profit is located at 5700 Broadway in the historic Slavic Vilage Business District and is open to the public for viewing 9 - 5 Monday thru Friday.
